One of the most important launches of the year has been, without doubt, the 5 in 1 universal recorders, also generally known as XVR’s.

These digital recorders allow the simultaneous use of the principal video formats in a single piece of equipment: HDCVI/HDTVI/AHD/CVBS/IP. The main advantage over 4 in 1 equipment is the possibility to mix and match technologies like HDCVI & HDTVI, whereas previously only a single video format could be used.

The first All in One solutions were launched by renowned manufacturers Hikvision & Dahua, while brands such as X-Security have been the first to put these models on sale in the European Marketplace. There are 3 Series each with different features to cover the requirements of the majority of installations.

Feature lists for the X-Security XVR recorders are:

  • Smart H.264+

H.264 is a general use video compression codec while the new H.264+ is a CCTV specific version developed specially for surveillance transmission and recording systems. H.264+ reduces the bandwidth and storage requirements by up to 70%.

  • “Hybrid” style IP channels

There are also important advances for IP cameras when compared to previous models. For example, where previous models such as Dahua’s S3 series DVR’s could only use IP cameras by substituting existing analogue channels, the new XVR technology permits the IP cameras to be added as additional, extra channels. You can also even substitute all available BNC coaxial channels for IP cameras if you so choose. There are also improvements in the maximum permitted resolution which is now 5Mpix (previously 2Mpix), available bandwidth and the inclusion of ONVIF support to enable compatibility with other brands such as Hikvision, Dahua, AXIS, Arecont Vision, Bosch, Brickcom, Canon, Dynacolor, Honeywell, Panasonic, Pelco, Samsung, Sony y Vivotek and many others.

  • Intelligent Video Analysis

For a long time DVR’s have incorporated video motion detection. The new XVR’s increase this capacity and can now intelligently analyse changes in video images, then create events and notifications or even activate other devices such as exits and alarms.

Detection rules can now be created and associated with video objectives. You can select from:
